Youth Art On Display!

Congratulations to church member Matt Bolger, a student at Schaumburg High School, on his inclusion in the art displayed at the Schaumburg Library!  Matt is an aspiring graphic designer and, apparently, a Packers fan.

Our children recently helped put on a puppet show as they learned about the Three Wise Men!  This puppet show is just one of the many interactive ways our preschool through 5th graders learn about the Bible!

ROCK-A-THON 2009!

Thank you to EVERYONE who supported our youth in their 10-hour-long venture into staying stuck in a ROCKING CHAIR on Sunday, November 22!  We had almost 20 youth in Jr. and Sr. High rocking all day to raise money for the youth mission trips and other upcoming youth events!

Thanks to everyone who loaned us rocking chairs, provided food, and most of all PLEDGED our youth!  The totals have not come in, but we know that we exceeded our $800 goal!

Caution: Men At Work

George and his crew have been spending a lot of time over at the parsonage lately, getting everything ready for the new pastor and his wife.  Check out those floors, new paint, counter tops, and cabinets.  Big thanks to everyone involved, especially Tom Dixon for his contributions.

Annual Church Picnic

Thanks to everyone for making our annual picnic a huge success!  The quality (and quantity) of the potluck dishes was outstanding, and even though we all ate our fill, we still had plenty of leftovers for the youth group to enjoy later that evening.

To all of you that baked pies, a HUGE thank you for providing us with a delicious way to cap off our day.  The three winning pies (in random order) of our pie baking contest were made by Kim Rose (Cherry), Joann Tobolik (Lemon Supreme), and Kathy Rice (Mixed Berry).  Thanks to our pie judges for your help in making the difficult decision on the outcome. Such a tough job, but someone had to do it!

And then there was “Dancing with the Methodists” and an afternoon of good wholesome fun.

Walking Program

Several members of Roselle UMC recently finished a six-week Walking Program.   PowerWalkerPedometerAt the end of the program we met to review our walking logs and share our “uphill and downhill” experiences.   As part of the program, the walkers received pedometers to measure their steps per day.

Next, we will be embarking on a NEW challenge, the Presidents’ Challenge.  The President’s Challenge is a program that encourages all Americans to make being active part of their everyday lives. Any activity qualifies for the President’s Active Lifestyle Program as long as you are active 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week for a total of 6 weeks (60 minutes a day for youths under 18).  We are looking forward to earning the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award.  This challenge is open to anyone interested in optimizing their lifestyle.  Come join us.

RUMC_Taste2009_00139 We had absolutely perfect weather for this year’s “Taste of Roselle”.  On Sunday, August 2, Roselle UMC again hosted a booth where we met new friends and said “howdy” to our old friends.

We gave away about 200 freeze-pops and kept both the adults and kids challenged with our two carnival games:  the ring game and the anti-gravity ball.  It looks easy, right?

It's a little early for pictures, I think.

Seven junior high youth (and two adults) with servant hearts  headed out on Saturday, August 1 through Saturday, August 8 for a Summer Mission Trip!  They spent their time in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan,  involved with the YouthWorks programs in the area, including working in a Long Term Care facility, a nursing home, cleaning a theater owned by the local Native American tribe, painting, gardening and helping out with a kids’ club run for the local children.

Fun times included a trip to the beach on Lake Superior, a visit to the Soo Locks, crossing the Mackinaw Bridge (twice!) and THE MYSTERY SPOT!  You’ll have to ask Val Sutton, Chester Musiala, Chloe Tabor, Ricky Kiepura, Rachel Fonseca, Gina Richard, Daniel Rose, Molly Dimpsey or Ben Rose about that last one!

Many thanks to Chloe Tabor for her nail painting skills!

Every year, both the Senior High and the Junior High youth groups dedicate part of their summer to making a true change in the world and learning how to be a positive witness for the Lord.

Roselle UMC’s Senior High mission team headed to Owensboro, Kentucky on Sunday July 26 for a week of hard work and good fun partnering with Habitat for Humanity on the construction of new housing.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;  your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of your hands.  – Psalm 138:8

Last week, 12 adults from Roselle UMC came together in an adult study of the Fruits of the Spirit. Over four days the group discussed the same “Fruits” as the children but in a decidedly adult way. To accommodate busy summer schedules, participants were encouraged to ‘come when you can’ resulting in a diverse and varied group with perspectives that changed a little bit each day.

Accounts throughout the bible, from 1Samuel in the Old Testament through 1John in the New Testament provided the background for an open, shared exploration of the topics.

The group spent their afternoons evaluating and discussing:
  • The difference between God’s Love and human love
  • Joy and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives
  • The sense of well-being and harmony with God and others that is Peace
  • Patience and its connection to forgiveness
  • Demonstrating Kindness through compassion and generosity
  • The Goodness of God and its evidence in our lives and in His response to our needs
  • God’s faithful presence in our lives and our Faithfulness toward others
  • Gentleness in our dealings with others and in our efforts to share the message of Christ
  • Self control and the importance of evaluating  decisions based on what God and Jesus tell us, not on how we “feel”

Taken together as a whole, these perspectives on the Fruits of the Spirit encouraged the Adult VBS group to focus on God’s involvement in our lives and in the itneractions we have everyday with our families, friends and even those who are strangers.

On Sunday, July 19 — held at 1:00 p.m. at Kemmerling Field, playing St. Walter’s Catholic Church.  Good times had by all!

Youth Car Wash 2009

RUMC CarWash2009 02

The annual Youth Car Wash was in full operation on Saturday, after last week’s rain out .  A big “thank you” goes out to not only the youth and adults who helped out, but to those who brought Dad’s car over to get shined up for Father’s Day.

Over $350 was raised towards covering the expense of this year mission trips.
